How to choose the right trailer hub or trailer drum

Selecting the correct trailer wheel hub assembly requires exact measurements. Guessing leads to unsafe towing conditions, ruined tires, and wasted money. Follow these 5 steps to find the perfect match for your rig.

1. Identify your axle capacity. Your axle weight rating dictates the physical size of your components. A 3,500 lb axle uses completely different bearings than a 7,000-lb or 12,000-lb axle. Check your axle tag or trailer VIN plate to confirm the exact factory capacity.

2. Measure your bolt pattern. You must match the lug count and the distance between the studs. Common patterns include 5 on 4½″, 6 on 5½″, and 8 on 6½″. To measure a 5 lug hub, measure from the center of 1 stud to the back edge of the stud furthest across from it. To measure a 6 lug or 8 lug hub, measure from the center of 1 stud directly across to the center of the opposite stud.

3. Check your bearing numbers. The absolute most accurate way to order parts is by checking the reference numbers stamped into your old bearings. Every hub assembly for trailer requires an inner bearing and an outer bearing. Pull your existing hub apart, wipe the grease off the metal, and read the stamped part numbers.

4. Verify your brake size. If you need a new trailer drum, measure the inner diameter and the depth of the friction surface. A standard 7,000 lb axle typically uses a 12″ by 2″ brake setup. Heavy commercial 10,000-lb axles might use a 12¼″ by 3⅜″ system. Your new drum must clear your existing brake shoes perfectly.

5. Choose your lubrication type. Standard hubs use thick packing grease to lubricate the bearings. You must manually repack these regularly. Heavy duty hubs often use an oil bath system. Oil bath hubs use fluid gear oil contained behind a clear plastic cap. This allows for visual fluid checks and longer service intervals.
